将 — jiāng

1. will; shall (modal verb used to indicate future)

   我将去北京出差。 wǒ jiāng qù běijīng chūchāi — I will go to Beijing on business.

2. to use; to take (as an instrument or means)

   将刀交给我。 jiāng dāo jiāogěi wǒ — Hand the knife to me.

3. to checkmate (in chess)

   他在最后一着将了对方。 tā zài zuìhòu yīzhe jiāng le duìfāng — He checkmated the opponent on the last move.

4. just a short while ago

   他将才离开，应该还没走远。 tā jiàngcái líkāi yīnggāi hái méi zǒu yuǎn — He just left a moment ago; he can't have gone far.

5. introduces object of main verb (like 把 ba3) — marks the object as being acted upon

   将这本书给我。 jiāng zhè běnshū gěi wǒ — Give me this book.

将 — jiàng

1. a general (military) ; (chess) the general piece for black

   这位将领指挥了军队。 zhèwèi jiànglǐng zhǐhuī le jūnduì — This general commanded the army.

2. to command; to lead (literary)

   将军率军出征。 jiāngjūn shuài jūn chūzhēng — The general led the troops into battle.

将 — qiāng

1. to desire; to invite; to request (literary or classical)

   周公将召贤才。 zhōu gōng jiāng zhào xiáncái — Duke Zhou desired to summon talented people.
