封顶 — fēngdǐng

1. to put a roof on a building; to complete the main structure (of a building); to top out

   昨天工地宣告已封顶，接下来开始做屋面工程。 zuótiān gōngdì xuāngào yǐ fēngdǐng jiēxiàlái kāishǐ zuò wūmiàn gōngchéng — The construction site announced it topped out yesterday; next they'll start roof work.

2. figurative: to put a ceiling/limit on (spending, prizes, ambition, etc.); to cap

   公司决定封顶年终奖金的最高额度。 gōngsī juédìng fēngdǐng niánzhōngjiǎngjīn de zuìgāo édù — The company decided to cap the maximum amount of the year-end bonus.

3. to reach the highest point (of growth, profit, interest rates); to top off; to peak

   股市在去年十月封顶后开始回落。 gǔshì zài qùnián shíyuè fēngdǐng hòu kāishǐ huíluò — After peaking in October last year, the stock market began to fall.

4. (horticulture) to stop growing (of a plant bud or branch)

   过度施肥可能导致花芽提前封顶，影响开花。 guòdù shīféi kěnéng dǎozhì huāyá tíqián fēngdǐng yǐngxiǎng kāihuā — Excessive fertilization may cause flower buds to stop growing prematurely, affecting blooming.
