对立 — duìlì

1. to oppose; to set something against; to be antagonistic to

   两种政策在议会中公开对立，难以达成一致。 liǎngzhǒng zhèngcè zài yìhuì zhōng gōngkāi duìlì nányǐ dáchéng yízhì — The two policies openly opposed each other in parliament, making agreement difficult.

2. antithetical; opposing; diametrical (as in opposite sides or viewpoints)

   这两种理论在基本假设上是对立的，不能同时成立。 zhè liǎngzhǒng lǐlùn zài jīběn jiǎshè shàng shì duìlì de bùnéng tóngshí chénglì — These two theories are diametrically opposed in their basic assumptions and cannot both be true.
