寄 — jì

1. to entrust; to place in somebody's care

   我把孩子寄给了奶奶照看。 wǒ bǎ háizi jìgěi le nǎinǎi zhàokàn — I entrusted the child to grandma to look after.

2. (bound form) to depend on; to lean on

   他的前途寄望于政府的支持。 tā de qiántú jìwàng yú zhèngfǔ de zhīchí — His future is pinned on the government's support.

3. to attach oneself to; to take refuge with

   小明寄居在朋友家里几个月。 xiǎo míng jìjū zài péngyǒu jiālǐ jǐgè yuè — Xiaoming stayed with a friend's family for several months.

4. to reside temporarily; to lodge

   他现在寄在学校的宿舍里。 tā xiànzài jì zài xuéxiào de sùshè lǐ — He is currently lodging in the school's dormitory.

5. (bound form) foster (as in 寄女 foster daughter)

   他从小被寄养在叔叔家。 tā cóngxiǎo bèi jìyǎng zài shūshū jiā — He was fostered at his uncle's home from a young age.

6. to send by post; to mail

   请把包裹寄到这个地址。 qǐng bǎ bāoguǒ jìdào zhège dìzhǐ — Please send the package to this address.
