家教 — jiājiào

1. family education; upbringing (the moral/behavioral education given by one's family)

   孩子的家教很重要，会影响他的一生。 háizi de jiājiào hěn zhòngyào huì yǐngxiǎng tā de yīshēng — A child's family upbringing is very important; it will affect their whole life.

2. to bring (a child) up; to rear; to raise (in the family context)

   他在上海长大，由祖父母家教成人。 tā zài shànghǎi zhǎngdà yóu zǔfùmǔ jiājiào chéngrén — He grew up in Shanghai and was brought up by his grandparents.

3. private tutor (a person who gives one-on-one lessons)

   他请了一个英文家教，每周两次上门辅导。 tā qǐng le yígè yīngwén jiājiào měizhōu liǎngcì shàngmén fǔdǎo — He hired an English tutor who comes twice a week for lessons.
