定 — dìng

1. to fix; to set; to make definite

   我们先把开会的时间定下来。 wǒmen xiān bǎ kāihuì de shíjiān dìng xiàlái — Let's first fix the meeting time.

2. to subscribe to (a newspaper etc); to book (tickets etc); to order (goods etc)

   他在车站定了两张去北京的票。 tā zài chēzhàn dìng le liǎngzhāng qù běijīng de piào — He booked two tickets to Beijing at the station.

3. to congeal; to coagulate

   汤冷了，油已经定了。 tāng lěng le yóu yǐjīng dìng le — The soup cooled and the oil has congealed.

4. (literary) definitely; certainly

   此事定有解释。 cǐshì dìngyǒu jiěshì — There will certainly be an explanation for this matter.
