1. Chinese character dictionary (entries for single characters, as opposed to 詞典/词典 ci2 dian3 which lists multi-character words)

   我在图书馆借了一本字典查单个汉字的意思。 wǒ zài túshūguǎn jièle yīběn zìdiǎn chá dāngè hànzì de yìsi — I borrowed a character dictionary from the library to look up the meaning of a single Chinese character.

2. (colloquial) dictionary; any book or resource used as a dictionary

   你没带手机也没关系，有没有字典我可以借用？ nǐ méi dài shǒujī yě méiguānxì yǒuméiyǒu zìdiǎn wǒ kěyǐ jièyòng — It's okay if you didn't bring your phone — can I borrow a dictionary?
