1. to seize; to take away forcibly

   敌军夺走了城市的控制权。 díjūn duózǒu le chéngshì de kòngzhìquán — The enemy forces seized control of the city.

2. to wrest control of (from someone); to capture leadership or command

   在党内斗争中，他成功夺得了总书记的位置。 zài dǎngnèidòuzhēng zhōng tā chénggōng duóde le zǒngshūjì de wèizhì — In the party struggle he succeeded in seizing the general secretary position.

3. to compete for; to vie for (prize, advantage, etc.)

   两家公司正在激烈争夺这个市场份额。 liǎngjiā gōngsī zhèngzài jīliè zhēngduó zhège shìchǎngfèné — The two companies are fiercely competing for this market share.

4. to force one's way through; to push through (a crowd, obstacle)

   他在人群中夺路而出，赶去救人。 tā zài rénqún zhōng duólù ér chū gǎnqù jiùrén — He forced his way through the crowd to go and rescue someone.

5. to leave out; to omit

   译文中有几处重要信息被夺去，导致意义不完整。 yìwén zhōng yǒu jǐchù zhòngyào xìnxī bèi duóqù dǎozhì yìyì bù wánzhěng — Several important pieces of information were omitted in the translation, causing the meaning to be incomplete.

6. to lose (rare/archaic usage)

   他因一时冲动夺了多年的好友。 tā yīn yīshíchōngdòng duó le duōnián de hǎoyǒu — Because of a moment's impulse, he lost a friend of many years.
