夹 — jiā

1. to press or pinch from both sides; to clamp between

   他用筷子把豆腐夹起来。 tāyòng kuàizi bǎ dòufǔ jiāqǐlái — He picked up the tofu with chopsticks (pinched it).

2. to put between; to sandwich or intersperse

   请把纸夹在书里保存。 qǐng bǎ zhǐjiā zài shū lǐ bǎocún — Please put the paper inside the book for safekeeping.

3. to carry something under the arm; to tuck under the arm

   他把信夹在胳膊下带走了。 tā bǎ xìn jiā zài gēbó xià dàizǒu le — He tucked the letter under his arm and walked off.

4. clip; folder; (a device or object used to clamp or hold)

   我用夹子把文件固定好。 wǒ yòng jiāzi bǎ wénjiàn gùdìng hǎo — I used a clip to secure the documents.

夹 — gā

1. axillary fold (anatomical term; used in 夹肢窝|夹肢窝)

   他抬起手，露出了夹肢窝。 tā táiqǐ shǒu lùchū le jiāzhīwō — He raised his arm, exposing his armpit.

夹 — jiá

1. double-layered; lined (of garments, quilts)

   这件棉袄是夹棉的，保暖性好。 zhèjiàn miánǎo shì jiā mián de bǎonuǎnxìng hǎo — This cotton-padded jacket is lined (double-layered) and keeps you warm.

夹 — jià

1. variant pronunciation (Taiwan) used in compounds such as 夹生 and 夹竹桃

   奶奶给我做了一件夹竹桃图案的衣服。 nǎinǎi gěi wǒ zuò le yījiàn jiāzhútáo túàn de yīfú — Grandma made me a piece of clothing with an oleander pattern.
