外边 — wàibian

1. the outside; the exterior (a place outside a building or room)

   我们到外边去玩吧。 wǒmen dào wàibiān qù wánba — Let's go play outside.

2. outer surface; the outside surface of something

   这把椅子的外边有点破。 zhè bǎ yǐzi de wàibiān yǒudiǎn pò — The outside of this chair is a bit damaged.

3. abroad; outside one's own country

   他常常到外边学习和工作。 tā chángcháng dào wàibiān xuéxí hé gōngzuò — He often goes abroad to study and work.

4. a place other than one's home; outside the house

   孩子们都在外边玩，家里很安静。 háizi men dōu zàiwài biānwán jiālǐ hěn ānjìng — The children are all playing outside; the house is very quiet.
