塞 — sāi

1. to plug; to stop up; to stuff into

   他把洞口塞住了，水就不漏了。 tā bǎ dòngkǒu sāizhù le shuǐ jiù bùlòu le — He plugged the hole, so the water didn't leak.

2. to stuff (into something, e.g., mouth, pockets)

   孩子把糖果塞进了口袋里。 háizi bǎ tángguǒ sāijìn le kǒudài lǐ — The child stuffed candies into his pocket.

3. a stopper; a cork (bound form)

   瓶塞已经坏了，换一个新的吧。 píngsāi yǐjīng huài le huàn yígè xīn de ba — The bottle stopper is broken; replace it with a new one.

塞 — sài

1. strategic stronghold (bound form)

   古代边塞驻扎着大量军队。 gǔdài biānsài zhùzhā zhe dàliàng jūnduì — In ancient times, frontier fortresses housed large garrisons.

塞 — sè

1. to block; to obstruct (bound form)

   大雪堵塞了山间道路。 dàxuě dǔsè le shānjiàn dàolù — Heavy snow blocked the mountain roads.
