堵 — dǔ

1. to block; to clog; to obstruct (a road, pipe, opening)

   前面的路被一辆货车堵住了，不能通行。 qiánmiàn de lù bèi yīliàng huòchē dǔzhù le bùnéng tōngxíng — The road ahead is blocked by a truck and cannot pass.

2. to stop up (a hole); to plug; to clog (e.g., sink, wound)

   水槽的下水口被头发堵住了，要清理一下。 shuǐcáo de xiàshuǐ kǒu bèi tóufā dǔzhù le yào qīnglǐ yīxià — The sink drain is clogged with hair and needs cleaning.

3. (fig.) choked up; stifled with anxiety or emotion

   听到坏消息后，他感到胸口堵得慌，说不出话来。 tīngdào huàixiāoxī hòu tā gǎndào xiōngkǒu dǔ dé huāng shuōbùchū huà lái — After hearing the bad news, he felt his chest tighten and couldn't speak.

4. wall (literary); (classical) wall

   古城的城堵高大坚固，至今仍能看到。 gǔchéng de chéng dǔ gāodà jiāngù zhìjīn réng néng kàndào — The ancient city's walls are tall and sturdy and can still be seen today.
