垫底 — diàndǐ

1. to put something on the bottom (of a container)

   把垫底的布铺好再放东西。 bǎ diàndǐ de bù pù hǎo zài fàng dōngxī — Lay the bottom cloth flat before putting items in.

2. to eat something to tide oneself over until mealtime

   先垫底吃点面包，等会再吃正餐。 xiān diàndǐ chī diǎn miànbāo děng huì zài chī zhèngcān — Have some bread to tide you over first; you'll eat the main meal later.

3. to lay the foundation; to provide a base

   这项调查为后续研究垫底了重要的数据。 zhèxiàng diàochá wèi hòuxù yánjiū diàndǐ le zhòngyào de shùjù — This survey laid the groundwork (provided basic data) for subsequent research.

4. to come last in the rankings; to finish at the bottom

   新球队连续几场失利，赛季垫底了。 xīn qiúduì liánxù jǐchǎng shīlì sàijì diàndǐ le — The new team lost several matches in a row and ended the season at the bottom.
