垫 — diàn

1. pad; cushion; mat

   他在椅子上放了一个垫子。 tā zài yǐzi shàng fàng le yígè diànzi — He put a cushion on the chair.

2. to pad out; to fill a gap (with padding or filler)

   她在鞋里垫了两层袜子，走路就不磨脚了。 tā zài xiélǐ diàn le liǎngcéng wàzi zǒulù jiù bù mó jiǎo le — She padded the shoes with two pairs of socks so they wouldn't rub.

3. to pay for somebody; to advance money

   这次饭钱我先垫着，回头你再还我。 zhècì fànqián wǒ xiān diànzhe huítóu nǐ zài hái wǒ — I'll pay the bill this time and you can pay me back later.
