1. plain; flatland (often in place names)

   他家住在坝上，附近都是平坦的土地。 tā jiāzhù zài bàshàng fùjìn dōu shì píngtǎn de tǔdì — His family lives on the plain; the nearby land is all flat.

2. sandbar; shoal (dialect)

   这条河里出现了一个小坝，船很难通过。 zhètiáo hélǐ chūxiàn le yígè xiǎo bà chuán hěn nán tōngguò — A small sandbar has appeared in the river; boats can scarcely pass.
