   这条路很坎坷，开车要小心。 zhètiáo lù hěn kǎnkě kāichē yào xiǎoxīn — This road is very bumpy; drive carefully.

2. (of life) rough; full of frustrations and dashed hopes

   他的人生坎坷，但从不放弃希望。 tā de rénshēng kǎnkě dàn cóng bùfàng qì xīwàng — His life has been rough, but he never gives up hope.

3. to be down on one's luck; to experience setbacks

   近几年我很坎坷，工作一直不顺利。 jìnjǐnián wǒ hěn kǎnkě gōngzuò yìzhí bùshùn lì — I've had a rough few years; my work hasn't gone well.
