地狱 — dìyù

1. hell (place of torment)

   他做了坏事，担心死后会下地狱。 tā zuò le huàishì dānxīn sǐ hòuhuì xià dìyù — He did bad things and worries he'll go to hell after death.

2. infernal; hellish (used adjectivally)

   那是一段地狱般的经历，我们都不想再提。 nà shì yīduàn dìyù bānde jīnglì wǒmen dōu bùxiǎng zài tí — That was a hellish experience; none of us want to mention it again.

3. the underworld; realm of the dead (mythical)

   古代传说里，神灵会把恶人送到地狱审判。 gǔdài chuánshuō lǐ shénlíng huì bǎ èrén sòngdào dìyù shěnpàn — In ancient tales, gods would send evildoers to the underworld for judgment.

4. Naraka (Buddhist concept of hell)

   佛经里描述地狱是众生因恶业受苦的去处。 fójīng lǐ miáoshù dìyù shì zhòngshēng yīn èyè shòukǔ de qùchù — Buddhist scriptures describe hell as the place where beings suffer for their bad karma.
