圆 — yuán

1. round; circular; spherical; (of shape) not angular

   这个杯子是圆的，不是方的。 zhège bēizi shì yuán de búshì fāng de — This cup is round, not square.

2. (of the moon) full; complete (as in a full moon)

   中秋节那天月亮又大又圆。 zhōngqiūjié nàtiān yuèliàng yòu dàyòuyuán — On Mid-Autumn Festival the moon was big and full.

3. unit of Chinese currency (yuan); (colloquial form written 圆/元)

   这本书二十圆。 zhè běnshū èrshí yuán — This book is twenty yuan.

4. tactful; tactfully accommodating; smooth (in social dealings)

   他为人很圆，懂得在职场周旋。 tā wéi rén hěn yuán dǒngde zàizhí chǎng zhōuxuán — He is very tactful and knows how to navigate the workplace.

5. to make consistent and whole; to reconcile (a story, lie, dream) — to smooth over inconsistencies

   他急忙编个借口把谎话圆过去。 tā jímáng biān gè jièkǒu bǎ huǎnghuà yuán guòqù — He hurriedly made up an excuse to patch over the lie.
