团 — tuán

1. round mass; lump; ball (of something soft, e.g. a wad of paper or a cloud of smoke)

   他把纸揉成一团扔进垃圾桶。 tā bǎ zhǐ róuchéngyītuán rēngjìn lājītǒng — He crumpled the paper into a wad and threw it into the trash.

2. to roll into a ball; to form into a lump or cluster

   她把面粉团成了一个圆球。 tā bǎ miànfěn tuán chéng le yígè yuánqiú — She rolled the flour into a round ball.

3. group; regiment; society — an organized group of people

   这个团负责组织志愿者活动。 zhège tuán fùzé zǔzhī zhìyuànzhě huódòng — This group is responsible for organizing volunteer activities.

4. classifier for a lump or a soft mass (e.g. yī tuán 纸 a wad of paper)

   桌上放着一团棉花。 zhuōshàng fàng zhe yītuán miánhuā — There is a wad of cotton on the table.

5. dumpling (regional or dialectal usage)

   奶奶包的肉团又香又嫩。 nǎinǎi bāo de ròu tuán yòu xiāng yòu nèn — The meat dumplings Grandma makes are fragrant and tender.
