唉 — āi

1. interjection or grunt of agreement/recognition (e.g. “yes, it's me!”)

   唉，是我。 āi shì wǒ — Oh — it's me.

2. to sigh

   他听完消息，忍不住唉了一声。 tā tīngwán xiāoxī rěnbúzhù āi le yīshēng — After hearing the news he couldn't help sighing.
