哼 — hēng

1. to groan; to moan (in pain, discomfort, or displeasure)

   他一听到那个消息就哼了一声，显得很不高兴。 tā yī tīngdào nàge xiāoxī jiù hēng le yīshēng xiǎnde hěn bù gāoxìng — When he heard the news he groaned, looking very unhappy.

2. to snort (show contempt or derision)

   她听了那个借口只是哼了一下，不屑回应。 tā tīng le nàge jièkǒu zhǐshì hēng le yīxià bùxiè huíyìng — She just snorted at the excuse and refused to respond.

3. to hum; to croon (sing softly to oneself)

   他在厨房里哼着小曲做饭，听起来很轻松。 tā zài chúfáng lǐ hēng zhe xiǎoqǔ zuòfàn tīng qǐlái hěn qīngsōng — He hummed a little tune in the kitchen while cooking; it sounded relaxed.

4. humph! (interjection expressing displeasure or mild scorn)

   “你又迟到了。” “哼，我有我的理由。” nǐ yòu chídào le hēng wǒ yǒu wǒ de lǐyóu — “You're late again.” “Humph, I have my reasons.”

1. interjection expressing dissatisfaction, suspicion, or dismissive doubt (humph!)

   他听到那种解释后只是哼了一声，显然不信。 tā tīngdào nàzhǒng jiěshì hòu zhǐshì hēng le yīshēng xiǎnrán bùxìn — After hearing that explanation he just said 'humph', clearly not believing it.
