哑 — yǎ

1. mute; dumb; unable to speak; (of a voice) hoarse, husky; (in compounds) dud (e.g. dud bomb)

   他生病后喉咙发炎，变得哑了，说不出话来。 tā shēngbìng hòu hóulóng fāyán biàndé yǎ le shuōbùchū huà lái — After he fell ill his throat became inflamed and he went mute; he couldn't speak.

哑 — yā

1. onomatopoeic sound "ya" (cawing; sound of an infant learning to talk); variant of 呀 ya1

   树上的乌鸦哑哑地叫了几声，然后飞走了。 shùshàng de wūyā yāyā dì jiào le jǐshēng ránhòu fēi zǒu le — The crow on the tree cawed a few times, then flew away.
