哄 — hǒng

1. to deceive; to cheat; to swindle

   他被人哄去交了一笔钱，结果是一场骗局。 tā bèi rén hǒng qù jiāo le yībǐ qián jiéguǒ shì yīcháng piànjú — He was tricked into paying money; it turned out to be a scam.

2. to coax; to cajole; to amuse (a child) — to calm or entertain someone, often a child

   她用玩具哄宝宝睡觉。 tā yòng wánjù hǒng bǎobǎo shuìjiào — She used a toy to coax the baby to sleep.

哄 — hōng

1. roar of laughter; hubbub; loud noise (onom.)

   听见教室里一阵哄笑，老师走了过来。 tīngjiàn jiàoshì lǐ yīzhèn hōngxiào lǎoshī zǒu le guòlái — I heard a burst of laughter in the classroom, and the teacher came over.

2. to roar (as a crowd); to make a loud commotion

   观众在比赛结束时对冠军的出现哄了起来。 guānzhòng zài bǐsài jiéshù shí duì guànjūn de chūxiàn hǒng le qǐlái — The audience roared when the champion appeared at the end of the match.
