咽 — yān

1. throat; pharynx; (also) narrow mountain pass

   他咽喉发炎，说话时感到疼痛。 tā yānhóu fāyán shuōhuà shí gǎndào téngtòng — His throat is inflamed and it hurts when he speaks.

咽 — yè

1. to choke (esp. when crying); to sob while unable to breathe clearly

   听到坏消息后她哭得咽不出话来。 tīngdào huàixiāoxī hòu tā kū dé yàn bùchū huà lái — After hearing the bad news she sobbed so hard she couldn't speak.
