和 — hé

  1. and; together with; with (joins nouns)

    我和你一起去市场。 wǒ hé nǐ yìqǐ qù shìchǎng — I will go to the market with you.

  2. sum (math.)

    两数相加的结果叫做它们的和。 liǎngshù xiāngjiā de jiéguǒ jiàozuò tāmen de hé — The result of adding two numbers together is called their sum.

  3. to make peace; to reconcile; to tie (in sports) / to draw

    这场比赛最终和了，双方各得一分。 zhèchǎng bǐsài zuìzhōng hú le shuāngfāng gè dé yīfēn — The match ended in a draw; both sides earned one point.

  4. harmonious (bound form); also used in compounds meaning 'Japan' or 'Japanese' (archaic/bound)

    她对和服文化很感兴趣，专门去日本学习。 tā duì héfú wénhuà hěngǎnxìngqù zhuānmén qù rìběn xuéxí — She is very interested in kimono culture and went to Japan specifically to study it.

  5. literary variant of harmonious (hé) — literary/archaic use

    邻里之间和睦相处最重要。 línlǐ zhījiān hémùxiāngchǔ zuì zhòngyào — Living harmoniously among neighbors is what matters most.

  6. surname He

    他姓和，在当地颇有名望。 tā xìng hé zài dāngdì pǒ yǒu míngwàng — His surname is He, and he has considerable prestige in the local community.

和 — hè

  1. to compose a poem in reply using the same rhyme; to join in singing; to chime in

    老师出了一首诗，学生们纷纷和诗回应，课堂气氛十分热烈。 lǎoshī chū le yīshǒu shī xuéshēng men fēnfēn hé shī huíyìng kètángqìfēn shífēn rèliè — The teacher composed a poem and the students responded in kind with their own verses, filling the classroom with lively energy.

和 — hú

  1. to complete a set (mahjong or cards)

    他刚和了一手好牌，赢了不少筹码。 tā gāng hú le yīshǒu hǎo pái yíng le bùshǎo chóumǎ — He just won a great mahjong hand and took quite a few chips.

和 — huó

  1. to combine a powdery substance with water (to make a paste); (Taiwan pr. huǒ4)

    她把面粉和水慢慢和在一起，揉成光滑的面团。 tā bǎ miànfěn hé shuǐ mànmàn hé zài yìqǐ róuchéng guānghuá de miàntuán — She slowly worked the flour and water together, kneading it into a smooth dough.

和 — huò

  1. to mix ingredients together; to blend; also a classifier for rinses of clothes or boilings of herbs (huǒ4)

    老中医把各种药材和在一起，配成了一副治咳嗽的药。 lǎozhōngyī bǎ gèzhǒng yàocái hé zài yìqǐ pèichéng le yīfù zhìkésòu de yào — The experienced Chinese medicine doctor blended various herbs together to make a cough remedy.
