命 — mìng

1. life; one’s existence

   她救了我的命，我非常感谢她。 tā jiù le wǒ de mìng wǒ fēichánggǎnxiè tā — She saved my life; I'm very grateful to her.

2. fate; destiny

   这都是命，很多事情无法改变。 zhè dōu shì mìng hěnduō shìqíng wúfǎ gǎibiàn — It's all fate; many things can't be changed.

3. an order or command

   他受到了上级的命，要立即执行这个计划。 tā shòudào le shàngjí de mìng yào lìjí zhíxíng zhège jìhuà — He received an order from his superior and must carry out the plan immediately.

4. to assign a name or title to someone/something

   国王命名这座新城为阳光城。 guówáng mìngmíng zhè zuò xīnchéng wèi yángguāngchéng — The king named the new city Sunshine City.
