呛 — qiāng

1. to choke (because of swallowing the wrong way)

   他喝水时呛到了，咳了好一会儿。 tā hēshuǐ shí qiàngdào le ké le hǎo yīhuìer — He choked when drinking water and coughed for a while.

呛 — qiàng

1. to irritate the nose; to make one cough/choke (of smoke, smell, etc.)

   厨房里的油烟太大，呛得我眼睛都红了。 chúfáng lǐ de yóuyān tàidà qiāngdé wǒ yǎnjīng dōu hóng le — The kitchen smoke was strong; it made my eyes water and choke me.

2. pungent; acrid

   这辣椒味道很呛，不太合我的口味。 zhè làjiāo wèidào hěn qiāng bù tàihé wǒ de kǒuwèi — This chili is very pungent; it's not to my taste.

3. (colloquial, Taiwan) to shout at someone; to scold; to speak out against someone

   他在会上呛了对方一顿，大家都很惊讶。 tā zài huìshàng qiāng le duìfāng yīdùn dàjiā dōu hěn jīngyà — He sharply spoke out at the other side during the meeting; everyone was surprised.
