吸收 — xīshōu

1. to absorb (a liquid, moisture, heat, etc.)

   这块海绵可以吸收很多水分。 zhèkuài hǎimián kěyǐ xīshōu hěnduō shuǐfèn — This sponge can absorb a lot of water.

2. to assimilate; to take in and make part of oneself (knowledge, ideas, culture)

   学生需要时间来吸收新学到的知识。 xuéshēng xūyào shíjiān lái xīshōu xīnxué dào de zhīshí — Students need time to assimilate newly learned knowledge.

3. to ingest; to absorb nutrients (in biology, digestion, or through skin/plants)

   植物通过根部吸收土壤中的养分。 zhíwù tōngguò gēnbù xīshōu tǔrǎng zhōng de yǎngfèn — Plants absorb nutrients from the soil through their roots.

4. to recruit; to take on (people into an organization)

   公司今年吸收了十名新员工。 gōngsī jīnnián xīshōu le shímíng xīn yuángōng — The company recruited ten new employees this year.
