吓 — xià

   那只狗把小孩都吓哭了。 nà zhǐ gǒu bǎ xiǎohái dōu xiàkū le — That dog frightened the child until he cried.

吓 — hè

1. to scare; to intimidate; to threaten

   他大声吼叫，想吓退对方。 tā dàshēnghǒujiào xiǎng xiàtuì duìfāng — He shouted loudly, trying to scare off the other side.

2. (interjection) tut-tut; expressing disapproval or mild reproach; also used to show astonishment

   吓，都这么晚了还不回家？ xià dōu zhèmewǎn le hái bù huíjiā — Tut-tut — it's so late and you're still not going home?
