1. name; nominal title; in name only (position or status that exists only on paper)

   他只是名义上的经理，实际上没有处理日常事务。 tā zhǐshì míngyì shàng de jīnglǐ shíjìshàng méiyǒu chǔlǐ rìchángshìwù — He is only the manager in name; in reality he doesn't handle daily affairs.

2. ostensible purpose; pretext (the stated reason or justification)

   他们以环保的名义停工，实际上是为了争取更好的待遇。 tāmen yǐ huánbǎo de míngyì tínggōng shíjìshàng shì wèile zhēngqǔ gènghǎo de dàiyù — They stopped work in the name of environmental protection, but in fact it was to demand better treatment.
