1. to close; to join; to fit; to match; to be equal to

   这两块拼图合得很好。 zhèliǎngkuài pīntú hédé hěn hǎo — These two puzzle pieces fit together very well.

2. whole; complete

   合计的数字已经核对完毕。 héjì de shùzì yǐjīng héduì wánbì — The total figures have been checked.

3. together; in combination

   我们合起来完成了这个项目。 wǒmen hé qǐlái wánchéng le zhège xiàngmù — We completed this project together.

4. conjunction (astronomy); celestial conjunction

   天文学上，月亮与金星合时引人注目。 tiānwénxué shàng yuèliàng yǔ jīnxīng hé shí yǐnrénzhùmù — In astronomy, when the moon and Venus are in conjunction it is striking.

5. the first note of the pentatonic scale (in traditional Chinese music)

   古琴曲通常以宫（合）为主音。 gǔqínqǔ tōngcháng yǐ gōng hé wéizhǔ yīn — Guqin pieces often use gong (he) as the tonic.
