叫板 — jiàobǎn

1. to signal the musicians (in Chinese opera) by prolonging a spoken word before beginning a song

   在京剧里，演员常常通过叫板来引出唱段。 zài jīngjù lǐ yǎnyuán chángcháng tōngguò jiàobǎn lái yǐnchū chàngduàn — In Beijing opera, actors often signal the musicians by prolonging a spoken word to lead into a singing segment.

2. (colloquial) to challenge; to provoke someone to a confrontation

   他当众叫板对手，结果事情变得很尴尬。 tā dāngzhòng jiàobǎn duìshǒu jiéguǒ shìqíng biàndé hěn gāngà — He publicly challenged his rival, and as a result things became very awkward.
