叫 — jiào

1. to shout; to cry out

   他大声叫了一下。 tā dàshēng jiào le yīxià — He shouted out loud.

2. to call (someone's name); to call out to someone

   我叫他别走。 wǒ jiào tā bié zǒu — I called to him not to leave.

3. to order (food, goods); to ask (someone to do something)

   我在饭馆里叫了一碗面。 wǒ zài fànguǎn lǐ jiào le yīwǎn miàn — I ordered a bowl of noodles at the restaurant.

4. to ask; to entrust (less common usage)

   他叫我帮他处理这件事。 tā jiào wǒ bāng tā chǔlǐ zhèjiàn shì — He asked me to help him handle this matter.

5. to be called; to be named

   我叫王伟。 wǒ jiào wáng wěi — My name is Wang Wei.

6. by (introduces the agent in a passive construction)

   我的自行车叫人偷走了。 wǒ de zìxíngchē jiào rén tōuzǒu le — My bicycle was stolen by someone.
