变质 — biànzhì

1. to degenerate; to deteriorate (in quality, morals, standards)

   他的思想逐渐变质，变得越来越功利。 tā de sīxiǎng zhújiàn biànzhì biàndé yuèláiyuè gōnglì — His thinking gradually degenerated and became more and more utilitarian.

2. (of food) to go bad; to spoil; to become inedible

   牛奶放久了会变质，别再喝了。 niúnǎi fàng jiǔ le huì biànzhì bié zài hē le — Milk will go bad if left too long; don't drink it anymore.

3. (geology) metamorphism; the process by which rock changes form under pressure/heat

   在高温高压条件下，岩石会发生变质作用。 zài gāowēngāoyā tiáojiàn xià yánshí huì fāshēng biànzhì zuòyòng — Under high temperature and pressure conditions, rocks undergo metamorphism.
