受 — shòu

1. to receive; to accept (something given or offered)

   他很高兴地受了这份礼物。 tā hěn gāoxìng dì shòu le zhèfèn lǐwù — He accepted this gift with great joy.

2. to suffer; to be subjected to (harm, treatment, influence)

   那座城市在战争中受了很大的破坏。 nà zuò chéngshì zài zhànzhēng zhōng shòu le hěndà de pòhuài — That city suffered great damage during the war.

3. to bear; to endure; to stand (tolerance of something)

   我实在受不了这个噪音。 wǒ shízài shòubùliǎo zhège zàoyīn — I really can't stand this noise.

4. pleasant; enjoyable (used in certain fixed expressions)

   这双新鞋穿着很受用。 zhèshuāng xīnxié chuānzhe hěn shòuyòng — These new shoes are very enjoyable to wear.

5. (grammatical) used in some constructions as a passive marker or in fixed expressions

   他在公司里受到了大家的尊重。 tā zài gōngsī lǐ shòudào le dàjiā de zūnzhòng — He has been respected by everyone in the company.

6. (slang; LGBT) bottom (sexual role)

   在那个圈子里，他被叫作受。 zài nàge quānzilǐ tā bèi jiàozuò shòu — In that circle, he is called a 'shòu' (bottom).
