发热 — fārè

1. to have a high temperature; to have a fever

   他昨晚开始发热，今天请假在家休息。 tā zuówǎn kāishǐ fārè jīntiān qǐngjià zàijiā xiūxī — He started running a fever last night and took the day off to rest at home.

2. feverish (as an adjective describing a person)

   她脸色苍白，手脚发冷，但又发热，可能发热得很厉害。 tā liǎnsècāngbái shǒujiǎo fālěng dàn yòu fārè kěnéng fārè dé hěn lìhài — Her face is pale and her hands and feet are cold but she’s feverish; she may have a high fever.

3. unable to think calmly; agitated; heated (emotionally)

   她额头发热，脸色潮红，看起来病得不轻。 tā étóu fārè liǎnsè cháohóng kànqǐlái bìngdé bùqīng — Her forehead was feverish and her face was flushed; she looked quite ill.

4. to emit heat; to give off heat

   化学反应会发热，因此必须做好冷却措施。 huàxuéfǎnyìng huì fārè yīncǐ bìxū zuòhǎo lěngquè cuòshī — The chemical reaction releases heat, so proper cooling measures are necessary.
