1. to become inflamed

   他的伤口发炎了，必须去看医生。 tā de shāngkǒufāyán le bìxū qù kàn yīshēng — His wound became inflamed; he must see a doctor.

2. inflammation (a medical condition)

   医生说检查结果显示有轻微的发炎。 yīshēng shuō jiǎnchá jiéguǒxiǎnshì yǒu qīngwēi de fāyán — The doctor said the test results show a slight inflammation.
