反 — fǎn

1. contrary; in reverse; inside out; upside down

   这件衣服反了，要翻过来穿。 zhèjiàn yīfú fǎn le yào fānguòlái chuān — This shirt is inside out; you need to turn it and wear it properly.

2. to reverse; to turn back; to return

   计划出了差错，我们不得不将局面反过来处理。 jìhuà chū le chācuò wǒmen bùdé bù jiāng júmiàn fǎnguòlái chǔlǐ — The plan went wrong; we had to reverse the situation.

3. to oppose; to be against; anti-

   他反对那个提议，认为不现实。 tā fǎnduì nàge tíyì rènwéi bù xiànshí — He opposed that proposal, thinking it unrealistic.

4. opposite; contrary

   他们的意见完全相反。 tāmen de yìjiàn wánquán xiāngfǎn — Their opinions are completely opposite.

5. to rebel; to revolt

   古代有许多人民反王朝的历史记录。 gǔdài yǒu xǔduō rénmín fǎn wángcháo de lìshǐjìlù — In ancient times there are many records of people rebelling against dynasties.

6. to use analogy; by analogy

   老师讲新内容时常常举一反三。 lǎoshī jiǎng xīn nèiróng shí chángcháng jǔyīfǎnsān — When teaching new material, the teacher often draws an analogy from one example to three.

7. instead; on the contrary (used to indicate contrast)

   他不生气，反而很高兴。 tā bù shēngqì fǎnér hěn gāoxìng — He wasn't angry; on the contrary, he was happy.

8. abbr. for 反切 (fan3 qie4) — a traditional Chinese phonetic system

   在古代音韵学中，反多指反切的方法。 zài gǔdài yīnyùnxué zhōng fǎn duōzhǐ fǎnqiè de fāngfǎ — In ancient phonology, 'fan' often refers to the fanqie method.
