卷 — juǎn

1. to roll up; to coil

   把地毯卷起来放好。 bǎ dìtǎn juǎnqǐ lái fànghǎo — Roll up the carpet and put it away.

2. to sweep up; to carry along (by a wave, current, trend)

   洪水很快把村子卷走了。 hóngshuǐ hěnkuài bǎ cūnzi juǎn zǒu le — The flood quickly swept the village away.

3. to drag/entangle somebody into (a situation)

   别把我卷进这场争吵。 bié bǎ wǒ juǎnjìn zhèchǎng zhēngchǎo — Don't drag me into this argument.

4. (slang) to compete to an unhealthy degree; 'involution' — hypercompetitive behavior

   现在学生都在为了成绩互相卷来卷去。 xiànzài xuéshēng dōu zài wèile chéngjì hùxiāng juǎnláijuǎnqù — Now students are all hyper-competing over grades.

5. a roll (thing that is rolled up); wad; spool

   桌上有一卷胶带。 zhuōshàng yǒu yījuàn jiāodài — There is a roll of tape on the table.

6. classifier for small rolled-up things (wad of paper money, film reel, etc.)

   他随身带着一卷胶带。 tā suíshēndài zhe yījuàn jiāodài — He carries a roll of tape with him.

7. to roll up; to sweep up (simpler/alternate CEDICT wording)

   风把草丛里的纸片卷走了。 fēng bǎ cǎocónglǐ de zhǐpiàn juǎn zǒu le — The wind rolled up the pieces of paper in the grass.

8. to carry along; to sweep away

   河水把树枝都卷走了。 héshuǐ bǎ shùzhī dōu juǎn zǒu le — The river carried the branches away.

   我买了一卷胶卷。 wǒ mǎi le yījuàn jiāojuǎn — I bought a roll of film.

1. scroll; volume (of a book); chapter

   这本书共有十卷。 zhè běnshū gòngyǒu shíjuǎn — This book has ten volumes.

2. examination paper; test paper

   老师把试卷发下来了。 lǎoshī bǎ shì juànfā xiàlái le — The teacher handed out the exam papers.

3. classifier for books, scrolls, paintings: volume/scroll

   这部古籍共有十二卷。 zhèbù gǔjí gòngyǒu shíèrjuǎn — This ancient book consists of twelve volumes.
