卡 — kǎ

1. to stop; to block

   东西卡住了，门打不开。 dōngxī kǎzhù le mén dǎbùkāi — Something is stuck; the door won't open.

2. (computing, coll.) slow (sluggish performance)

   这台电脑很卡，浏览网页都要等很久。 zhè tái diànnǎo hěn kǎ liúlǎn wǎngyè dōu yào děng hěnjiǔ — This computer is very slow; it takes a long time to browse web pages.

3. card (loanword; e.g., bank card, ID card); CL: 張|张[zhang1], 片[pian4]

   请出示您的会员卡。 qǐng chūshì nín de huìyuánkǎ — Please show your membership card.

4. truck (colloquial, from 'car')

   街上停了几辆大卡在卸货。 jiēshàng tíng le jǐliàng dàkǎ zài xièhuò — A few big trucks are parked on the street unloading goods.

5. calorie (abbr. for 卡路里 kǎlùlǐ)

   这块蛋糕大约有三百卡。 zhèkuài dàngāo dàyuē yǒu sānbǎi kǎ — This piece of cake has about 300 calories.

6. cassette (tape)

   我在旧箱子里找到几盒旧卡带。 wǒ zài jiù xiāngzi lǐ zhǎodào jǐhé jiùkǎ dài — I found several old cassettes in the old box.

卡 — qiǎ

1. to block; to be stuck; to be wedged

   抽屉卡住了，拉不出来。 chōutì kǎzhù le lā bùchū lái — The drawer is stuck and won't pull out.

2. customs station; checkpoint; checkpost

   车辆在海关卡口接受检查。 chēliàng zài hǎiguān qiǎkǒu jiēshòu jiǎnchá — Vehicles are inspected at the customs checkpoint.

3. a clip; a fastener

   用卡把文件夹好，不要弄丢。 yòng kǎ bǎ wénjiànjiā hǎo búyào nòng diū — Use a clip to secure the documents so they don't get lost.

4. Taiwan pronunciation variant of 卡 [ka3]

   她用发卡把刘海别到一边。 tā yòng fàqiǎ bǎ liúhǎi bié dào yībiān — She used a hairpin to clip her bangs to the side.
