卖 — mài

1. to sell

   我把旧书卖给了朋友。 wǒ bǎ jiùshū mài gěi le péngyǒu — I sold the old books to a friend.

2. to betray; to sell out (someone)

   他为了利益出卖了自己的朋友。 tā wèile lìyì chūmài le zìjǐ de péngyǒu — He betrayed his friend for profit.

3. to spare no effort; to exert oneself (as in 卖力)

   他在比赛中非常卖力，赢得了掌声。 tā zài bǐsài zhōng fēicháng màilì yíngdé le zhǎngshēng — He worked very hard in the competition and won applause.

4. to show off; to flaunt

   他喜欢在朋友圈里卖弄他的名牌包。 tā xǐhuān zài péngyǒu quānlǐ màinòng tā de míngpái bāo — He likes to show off his designer bag on social media.
