   他常常在半夜才回家。 tā chángcháng zài bànyè cái huíjiā — He often doesn't get home until the middle of the night.

2. in the middle of the night (used adverbially: at an hour when most are asleep)

   半夜我醒来去喝水。 bànyè wǒ xǐnglái qù hēshuǐ — I woke up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water.
