升 — shēng

1. to ascend; to rise; to go up

   热气球缓缓升上天空。 rèqìqiú huǎnhuǎn shēngshàng tiānkōng — The hot air balloon slowly rose into the sky.

2. to promote; to elevate (to a higher rank or position)

   他被公司升为副经理。 tā bèi gōngsī shēngwèi fùjīnglǐ — He was promoted to deputy manager by the company.

3. liter (unit of volume); also a traditional Chinese dry measure for grain (equal to one liter or one-tenth dou 斗[dou3])

   这瓶牛奶有一升。 zhè píng niúnǎi yǒu yī shēng — This bottle of milk contains one liter.
