包袱 — bāofu

1. wrapping cloth (piece of cloth used to wrap things)

   她用一块包袱把碗包好了。 tā yòng yīkuài bāofú bǎ wǎn bāohǎo le — She used a piece of wrapping cloth to wrap the bowl.

2. a bundle wrapped in cloth; parcel (a wrapped bundle of personal belongings)

   他背着一个旧包袱上了路。 tā bèizhe yígè jiù bāofú shàng le lù — He set off carrying an old bundle.

3. burden; load; something emotionally or practically weighing someone down

   他有很多家庭包袱，难以放心工作。 tā yǒu hěnduō jiātíng bāofú nányǐ fàngxīn gōngzuò — He has many family burdens, making it hard to focus on work.

4. funny part; punchline (the humorous or striking part of a story or performance)

   这个相声的包袱很新，观众笑个不停。 zhège xiàngshēng de bāofú hěn xīn guānzhòng xiào gè bùtíng — The comic cross-talk's punchlines are fresh; the audience laughed nonstop.
