1. to strap tightly; to bind; to tie up

   请把行李的带子勒紧，别松了。 qǐng bǎ xínglǐ de dàizi lēijǐn bié sōng le — Please tighten the strap on the luggage; don't let it loosen.

勒 — lè

1. bridle; halter; headstall (literary)

   骑士给战马套上了一副新勒。 qíshì gěi zhànmǎ tào shàng le yīfù xīn lēi — The knight put a new bridle on his warhorse.

2. to rein in; to restrain; to compel; to force (someone to do something)

   警方勒令该公司立即停业整顿。 jǐngfāng lèlìng gāi gōngsī lìjí tíngyèzhěngdùn — The police ordered the company to cease operations and rectify immediately.

3. to carve; to engrave (literary)

   碑上勒有诗人题写的铭文。 bēi shàng lēi yǒu shīrén tíxiě de míngwén — The stele has an inscription carved by the poet.

4. to command; to lead (an army) (literary)

   将军受命勒师南下平乱。 jiāngjūn shòumìng lēi shī nánxià píngluàn — The general was ordered to lead the troops south to quell the rebellion.
