刹车 — shāchē

1. to brake (apply brakes to slow or stop a vehicle)

   司机突然刹车，车里的人都被吓了一跳。 sījī tūrán shāchē chēlǐ de rén dōu bèi xiàleyītiào — The driver braked suddenly and everyone in the car was startled.

2. to stop; to come to a halt (general)

   会议因为问题太多不得不停下来刹车讨论。 huìyì yīnwèi wèntí tàiduō bùdé bùtíng xiàlái shāchē tǎolùn — The meeting had to stop for discussion because there were too many issues.

3. to switch off (figurative or machine-specific use)

   这个程序出问题了，得先刹车再重启。 zhège chéngxù chū wèntí le dé xiān shāchē zài chóngqǐ — This program has an issue; we need to stop it first and then restart.

4. to check or rein in (bad habits, excessive behavior)

   他最近开始刹车，少喝酒也开始锻炼了。 tā zuìjìn kāishǐ shāchē shǎo hējiǔ yě kāishǐ duànliàn le — He has started to rein himself in recently: drinking less and exercising.

5. brake (the device)

   刹车坏了，必须马上修理。 shāchē huài le bìxū mǎshàng xiūlǐ — The brakes are broken; they must be repaired immediately.
