别 — bié

1. to leave; to part (from)

   我们在门口告别了。 wǒmen zài ménkǒu gàobié le — We said goodbye at the door.

2. to differentiate; to distinguish

   我们要学会辨别真假信息。 wǒmen yào xuéhuì biànbiézhēnjiǎ xìnxī — We must learn to distinguish true from false information.

3. to turn away; to avert (one's face, gaze) (dialect)

   他听了便别了脸。 tā tīng le biàn bié le liǎn — He listened and then turned his face away.

4. other; another; different (bound form: used in compounds)

   性别表示人的生理差异。 xìngbié biǎoshì rén de shēnglǐ chāyì — Sex/gender indicates physiological differences between people.

5. don't ...! (prohibitive imperative)

   不管多晚，你都别走，等我回来。 bùguǎn duō wǎn nǐ dōu bié zǒu děng wǒ huílái — No matter how late it is, don't go — wait for me to come back.

6. to fasten with a pin or clip; to stick in; to insert (to hinder movement)

   请用别针把照片别在墙上。 qǐngyòng biézhēn bǎ zhàopiān bié zài qiángshàng — Please use a pin to fasten the photo to the wall.

7. (noun suffix) category; class (as in 性别 xìngbié, 派别 pàibié)

   申请表上请填写姓名和性别。 shēnqǐngbiǎo shàng qǐng tiánxiě xìngmíng hé xìngbié — On the application form, please fill in your name and gender.

8. surname Bie

   别先生是我的中文老师。 bié xiānshēng shì wǒ de zhōngwén lǎoshī — Mr. Bie is my Chinese teacher.
