判 — pàn

1. to judge; to decide; to form an opinion or conclusion

   我们还需要更多证据才能判这个案子。 wǒmen hái xūyào gèngduō zhèngjù cáinéng pàn zhège ànzi — We need more evidence before judging/deciding this case.

2. to differentiate; to distinguish (between things)

   医生很难判出这两种病的区别。 yīshēng hěn nán pàn chū zhè liǎngzhǒng bìng de qūbié — The doctor finds it hard to distinguish between these two diseases.

3. (bound form) clearly (different); distinctly

   两者的风格判然不同。 liǎngzhě de fēnggé pànránbùtóng — The two styles are distinctly different.

4. to grade; to assign a score (in exams, competitions)

   老师今天下午要判作文。 lǎoshī jīntiānxiàwǔ yào pàn zuòwén — The teacher will grade the essays this afternoon.

5. (of a judge) to sentence; to pass judgment (punishment)

   法官最后判他有期徒刑五年。 fǎguān zuìhòu pàn tā yǒuqītúxíng wǔnián — The judge ultimately sentenced him to five years' imprisonment.
