出头 — chūtóu

1. to get out of a predicament; to emerge from difficulty

   这次亏损后，公司总算出头了。 zhècì kuīsǔn hòu gōngsī zǒngsuàn chūtóu le — After this loss, the company finally got out of trouble.

2. to stick out; to protrude

   那块木板出头了，走路要小心。 nàkuài mùbǎn chūtóu le zǒulù yào xiǎoxīn — That plank is sticking out; be careful walking.

3. to take the initiative; to come forward (to act or speak)

   谁都不愿意负责，他只好自己出头解决问题。 shéi dōu bù yuànyì fùzé tā zhǐhǎo zìjǐ chūtóu jiějuéwèntí — No one wanted to take responsibility, so he had to step forward and solve the problem himself.

4. the remaining odd fraction after a division (math); remainder

   把7除以3，出头是1。 bǎ 7 chúyǐ 3 chūtóu shì 1 — Divide 7 by 3; the remainder is 1.

5. a little more than; slightly over

   这道题做了十分钟出头就完成了。 zhè dào tí zuò le shífēnzhōng chūtóu jiù wánchéng le — This problem took just over ten minutes to finish.
