出 — chū

1. to go out; to leave

   我现在要出门。 wǒ xiànzài yào chūmén — I'm going out now.

2. to come out; to appear

   太阳出来了。 tàiyáng chūlái le — The sun has come out.

3. to arise; to occur (a problem, situation)

   会议上出了一些问题。 huìyì shàng chū le yīxiē wèntí — Some problems arose at the meeting.

4. to produce; to yield (a result or product)

   这棵树每年出很多果子。 zhè kē shù měinián chū hěnduō guǒzi — This tree yields a lot of fruit every year.

5. to go beyond; to exceed

   他的成绩出乎意料地超过了大家的预期。 tā de chéngjì chūhūyìliào dì chāoguò le dàjiā de yùqī — His results unexpectedly exceeded everyone's expectations.

6. particle used after a verb to indicate outward direction or a positive/resultant action (verb + 出)

   他把信拿出来了。 tā bǎ xìn ná chūlái le — He took the letter out.

7. classifier for dramas, plays, operas, etc.

   今晚剧院上演两出经典京剧。 jīnwǎn jùyuàn shàngyǎn liǎng chū jīngdiǎn jīngjù — The theater is staging two classic Peking opera pieces tonight.
